Wallpaper. I don’t really know what else to say about wallpaper without it descending into a slather of profanities and curses. Especially when that wallpaper is probably 40 years old. To say it has to go is the easy part. But as the saying goes: “easier said than done”. It was all worth it because this would be the perfect room for an office.
This is the office?
This room, bedroom three, gets the best sun in the house. It’s absolutely beautiful. We decided with Amos working a few days from home each week, that this would be the best room to convert into the office. It will also double as my little music station when I get around to plugging everything back in.
There was a lot of work to do before we got there.
This room backs onto the lounge room, which formerly hosted a fireplace. At some point, the fireplace sunk in its footings, creating leaks down its structure. While it has since been removed and the leaks repaired, in fact the roof was replaced, the damage to this room had been done. Water damage to the ceiling, flaking wallpaper, and the loveliest of mould. Thankfully all these would be rectified in the process of renovating the room.
There is not a huge amount else to say on this one. The goal for the room was the same. New skirts, paint, some extra power points. It may sound simple, but Amos described this room as the “Van Gogh on acid” room. A pale paisley wallpaper with a blue patterned carpet. Yes, you read that right. Seeing as this can be “bedroom three”, we added an inbuilt wardrobe in here as well. It would be remiss of me not to mention how hard it was to remove that wallpaper though. This was the old type of wallpaper, that was stuck to the wall with a backing sheet of glue. This proved harder to remove than initially though. The only way to get it off was to soak it with sugar water, let it soak in, and peel it off with a paint scraper. It took days and days to get it off.
But in removing the backing paper we really hit a conundrum. The wall sheets were Masonite, and not plasterboard. Why, we have no idea. We didn’t know if we should just pull the boards out, or patch up the gaps and paint. We decided on the latter to keep costs down, and the result is you wouldn’t even know.
I’ll let the pictures talk
This room is the biggest we have to deal with (until we get to the bathroom). I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves. Well, that is until I hang my guitars on the wall in all their glory. But that is for another day.
- All that backing paper has to go before we can paint.
- Wallpaper gone but still major work to do
- Sealing the gaps and underecoat with Papa Amos
- Nope, still too long
- Amos has become the master of the gloss paint
- Office or third bedroom? Builtins just in case
- Painting the skirts

A musician, and IT professional, master of the flat pack assembly and now a home renovator. A man of many skills, you could call him a renaissance man. But not in like the whole Renaissance fair type deal. Those things are just weird.
