I’d almost forgotten about the effort involved in bringing back to life our beautiful timber floor boards. Having just stripped the wallpaper off the walls in what will become our study / office, or as I currently call “stupidf&*kingb%@chf@#kc*^t-of-a-room”, I was certain that was the WORST JOB EVER.

Then i remembered the tiles.

Oh…

My…

God…

You deceptive little bastards.

You came off so easy at first. The entrance way was swept aside by Amos’s feeble little arms in no time flat. And the first half of the hallway was a breeze (even if we did take a few chunks out of the timber below). But the area near the bedrooms and the bathroom had other ideas in mind for us.

We had a tight deadline, with the floor sanding guys scheduled to come in two days later before we moved anything in. We were originally going to leave the tiles in the hallway for later, but when we saw how easy they came up at the start, we decided to go all in.

And all in we did.

And it pretty much killed me.

Floor tiles on timber usually have a small amount of glue underneath and the grout holding them in place. Most of ours were the same. That is until we approached the bathroom area. I swear, they must have had a bucket of the glue left (we think it may have been black mastic but we are not so sure) and proceeded to empty it on this one small patch before roughly spreading it around with what I imagine was small fluffy dog on a stick.

damaged timber

A little over zealous there Beku!

After chipping away with a hammer and chisel the Thursday night and half of Friday morning, I cracked it. I found the nearest hardware rental, Kennards at Ryde, and got myself a jackhammer.

Screw you tiles, you are going down.

And they did. Tumbling and flying through the air like an under-baked cheesecake base. Maybe we won’t mention it still took me FIVE HOURS with the jackhammer to get those things up. Five very long, hard, arduous hours.

The important thing is they got done. The floor guys came in and by Tuesday we had (mostly) magnificent timber floors to walk on. It was a lot of effort, but definitely worth it. Especially for one of my favourite photos ever.

And in local news, #auburn man goes on tile killing rampage. Full report at 6pm. #tilessuck #showmethetimber #outerinnerwest
